Jul 10, 2017 By default, Chrome downloads files to the “Downloads” folder in your user account. If you would rather save them to a different location, you can easily change the Chrome download folder location. Click the Chrome menu button (three horizontal bars) in the upper-right corner of the Chrome window and select “Settings” from the drop-down. By default, all your downloaded files go to the Downloads folder. This applies to any downloads made from web browsers like Chrome, Safari, or even from file transfer apps like AirDrop. Since the Downloads folder is the default download destination in Mac, you may want to know how to quickly access it. You can view your Mac folders as icons, columns, or even as album covers. You can change the view of your Mac folders by simply clicking the appropriate View button in the toolbar at the top of the Finder window. The View Options window changes depending on which view you have chosen.

Icon View
Nov 30, 2017 The Downloads folder is aptly named, since it’s where anything you download from Safari – or other browsers – ends up. This setting can be changed: in Safari, for example, go to Safari Preferences, click General, choose Other from File download location, and then select a different folder. Most people, though, stick with the default. Jul 14, 2016 Whether they’re apps, work files, school files, photos, or something else you want to have on your computer, all those downloads have to go somewhere. On the Mac, the default folder for downloads in Safari is the Downloads folder. In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to change that so your downloaded files go somewhere else on your Mac.
The figure shows the home folder window through what’s known as the icon view because the windows are populated by pretty little pictures. You know the Music subfolder by its icon of a musical note. And you know the Movies subfolder by the small picture of a strip of film or (in pre-Leopard versions of OS X) a movie clapper.
If you’re having trouble viewing the View buttons, click the oval button to the upper-right corner of the window to zoom in.
You can change the size of the icons by choosing View→Show View Icons and moving the Icon size slider from left to right. Drag the Grid spacing slider to change the distance between icons.
By choosing View→View Options, you can alter the position of an icon label by clicking the Bottom or Right radio button. You can change the color of the window background or use one of your own images as the background. You can also arrange the order of icons by the date they were modified, the date they were created, size, kind, or label. Or choose Snap to Grid to make icons obediently align themselves in rows and columns.
Column view
To see your Mac folders by column, choose View→As Columns. The check mark moves, altering your perspective. Several vertical panes appear inside one large window. These smaller windows within windows show a progression. At the far left is a pane called the sidebar, a regular hangout for your network, hard disk, home folder, applications, documents, movies and more. The sidebar appears in the same place in every Finder window.
If you have a folder highlighted in the sidebar, the pane to its immediate right displays its contents. Highlight an item in that pane, and the folder to its immediate right reveals its contents. Each time you highlight an entry in a particular pane, a new pane appears to its right.
You can resize a column pane by dragging the handle at the bottom of the pane. To resize all the columns simultaneously, press the Option key while dragging. You can expand the entire window by dragging its handle at the bottom right.
Cover Flow view
Cover Flow, the three-dimensional album art feature that Apple introduced awhile back in iTunes, helps you organize your files on your Mac. To access Cover Flow, click the Cover Flow icon in the Finder toolbar or choose View→As Cover Flow. By dragging the slider, you can flip through high-resolution previews of documents, images, Adobe PDF files, and more, just as you can flip through those album covers in iTunes.
Thanks to Cover Flow, you can skip past the first page in multipage PDF documents or slides in a presentation created with Apple’s own Keynote program. To do so, move the mouse over the Cover Flow image and click the arrows that appear.

You can easily change the Downloads folder location on Mac OS X.
Why Move Downloads Folder?
There may be different reasons why people want to move their Downloads folder location.
These days many of the Apple Macs come with solid state drives (SSD) which are not as large in volume/capacity as the hard disk drives (HDD) used to be. For example, the standard Macbook Pro Retina comes with 256GB of SSD space. Some of that is used for the operating system and then you are left with very little for photos, downloads, files, apps, etc.

As a result of new Macs with smaller internal storage, you may want to move your Downloads folder to another volume such as an external drive, flash drive or SD card connected to your Mac. Yes, you can move your downloads folder permanently to another volume like this.
How To Move Mac OS Downloads Folder
Follow these steps to move your Downloads folder on Mac OS to another location:
1. Create New Downloads Folder
Go to the location where you want your new Downloads folder to be and create a folder named “Downloads“.
For example, I have an external drive plugged into USB where I want the Downloads folder to be. So I find my external drive in Finder and create a new “Downloads” folder there.
2. Copy Existing Downloads Over
If you want to keep your existing downloads, you’ll need to copy it over.
Simply use the Finder app to drag and drop the contents of the existing Downloads folder to the new Downloads folder.
3. Delete Old/Default Downloads Folder
In order to create a symbolic link in step 4 below, you’ll need to delete the old/default Downloads folder in Mac OS. It may not be possible to delete the old/default Downloads folder in Finder directly due to permissions on the folder so you’re better off doing it in the Terminal using sudo command.
Open the Terminal app and type the following command followed by your password for your account:
View the code on Gist.

Note that this deletes your old/default Downloads folder with all it’s contents.
4. Create Symbolic Link
Next you’ll create a symbolic link from the default Downloads folder in Mac OS to the new one in the other location.
Open the Terminal and type the following command:
View the code on Gist.
Note that command creates a link (ln command) between a target and source directory. The
-s
parameter creates a symbolic link.Be sure to change
/Volumes/My Passport 1/Downloads/
with the absolute path to your new Downloads folder you created in the new location. In my case, Mac OS gave my external drive the path /Volumes/My Passport 1/
and then I add the /Downloads/
part to the path in the command. The backslashes in the path is simply to escape the spaces in the folder name of the external drive. If you’re not sure what the path to the new location is and you’re using either an internal or external storage, you can use the Disk Utility app in Mac OS to determine the mount point.

The symbolic link you created in step 4 will ensure that any applications putting downloads in the old location
~/Downloads
will go to the new Downloads folder in the new location so that you don’t have to go and edit the Downloads folder in individual applications.
